Good afternoon Tukapa supporters, this week I take a week off writing the newsletter and have asked our New Club captain to give you all an update about the upcoming season and to introduce himself. See you all next week for another Chooks news update

Club Captain Report

Welcome to the 2024 season, a change of the guard this year with Daniel Green stepping down as Club Captain and seeing another Daniel (that’s me) take over the role from a great club man in Greeny who has done some great work and left big shoes to fill, whilst I won’t be able to fill the boots Greeny fills on the field with our mighty Senior 3rds I am sure the Club Captain’s shoes I will get into and serve the club with pride & passion along the way.

Many of you will know me from my time as Premier Manager for the last 5 seasons 2019-2023, what some won’t know is that I have a much deeper background with the club & also rugby than just sitting in that role for 5 seasons, I held the position of Team Manager for our Bs 2016-2017, managed Taranaki Development Squad 2018 & 2019 along with management roles with Taranaki Maori also and more recently continue to be on the board of the Tukapa also. Whilst I never got to run on the field as a player I have as much passion for our great club and bleed blue & white just as much as a player does. The club also runs deep in my family with my wife Kerry having played netball in her younger years for Tukapa as well as my youngest son played all his junior rugby for our club also, and hopefully once his time at high school is done he will return to the club as a player, so Tukapa is in my blood.

So with that little introduction being said onto some rugby and where the club is going for 2024, I can tell you that this year should see all of our men’s teams fitter than ever as our Prems management team have had a “Chooks Spartans Challenge” running for the last few weeks which has seen players from across all the squads get involved in this challenge to up the players fitness but also challenged the likes of Coaches, Club Chairman & myself to participate as well. This challenge has set the bar for many of our players which I am sure will see great physical & mental strength added to squads.

2024 will see our newly formed Tukapa Women’s team take to the Women’s competition and after many conversations I’ve had with Coach Plims it is apparent that the coaching team for our women’s squad is dedicated to seeing our Tukapa Women stand with pride in the Blue & White but also get out and enjoy this great game. Look out for the stand-alone facilities for our women turning up at the club in the coming weeks, along with our women taking to the field in the Blue & White

As I sit and write out this for our newsletter after a visit from Scotty asking me for a report we are planning to meet at the club to start to prepare a job list for our upcoming Blue & White Working Bee to get our club ready for the season ahead, and many hands make light work so please stay tuned for the date of our working bee and come lend a hand and help get the Chook-House ready for what I am sure will be a jam-packed season of rugby, friendship, banter & fun.

Well for now best I get back to my day job, don’t be a stranger at the club the doors are always open and the beer is always cold. I look forward to catching up with many of you either on gamedays, at the club, or just wherever I pop up which seems to be many places, always hear for a yarn about anything club-related you want to chat about or want to raise with the board.

Tukapa Lawn Bowls Day

The first big social event for the club will be our Tukapa Lawn Bowls Day held at Vogletown Bowling Club on 10th March. This is a fun day and we want all players, supporters, and friends of Tukapa to be involved in. Teams will be playing for the Komene Cup for the first time. Along with the increase in living costs, we have also had to put our season memberships up to keep our club ticking, these are now due and can be paid through the links below or over the bar on a Thursday, Friday, or Saturday.

Division 2:	$3,000 team fee
Colts:	$120 (or $60 if first year in Colts Grade)
Juniors:	$40 1 child in the family/$70 for 2/$90 for 3 or more in the family
Non-Playing Members (Social Membership):	$50

All memberships may include a partner for an extra $10 per annum which will entitle them to a member’s card and season passes.

Chairpersons Update

Well, we are another week closer to seeing some Blue and White code getting played so we can all go and watch. The guys are now training Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:00pm and have been working hard. There have been good numbers at training but we are on the hunt for a few more Colts players and also a few more backs club-wide. If you are keen to play, turn up or message our Social pages.

The best news of the week came on Wednesday night when our female team trained and we had 18 ladies turn up and train and also had 6 apologies. They had an awesome training session. With this news, we have now hit “go” on our temporary stand-alone women’s facilities. In the next week, you will see an advert for a paid role for our child care person for the Mums in the team.

At this stage, our ladies' season will be as follows:

Okiawa Pre-season 23rd of March (curtain raiser for Poneke Mens Premier game)
Coastal Pre-season 13th April (Old Timers Day and all teams at home against Coastal)

This is great news to finally be there with our Women’s team. We are still looking for more players so if you are keen, message our socials or turn up Wednesday at 6:00pm.

Egmont Seeds has been the sponsor of the Tukapa Premiers for the last 5 years and has handed the sponsorship over to another sponsor this year. The club appreciates the support Jock and his team have given the club over many years and we as club members will always think of Egmont Seeds when we have any needs to do with our home gardens.

Chairpersons Update

Well, it’s been a long time between Newsletters, with the busy days of Christmas out of the way and the month we Tradies take off we are almost back to normal. I will give you a bit of a rundown of what has gone on over the off-season and a preview of where we are at as we start the pre-season training.

First up back in November, the Board put me up for Marist Personality of the Year. I reckon due to the well-written entry from our President Lindsay Thomson, I managed to pick up the award. I'd like to point out we don’t do these jobs for awards but more for the love of the game.

From here we moved on to our Tukapa AGM in late November where we had a really good turnout. Most of you would have seen the minutes from this but the main change is that we say a massive thank you to Daniel Green for being our club captain over the last 4 years, there is a lot of stuff you don’t see that Greenie does for the club and he is always first to put his hand up to help out when asked. The good news is Greenie is still staying on the board and will also hand his Club Captain role over to a current board member and retired Premier Manager Dan Johansen, I am sure that Dan will do a great job and it’s great to still have both these men involved in our Board. Tukapa Darts

From here we moved into our Tukapa Darts Club Christmas Party, and this was another huge success with a good turnout and a bar taking to match, I thank Jason Clout for being MC for the night and the rest of the Tukapa Darts Members and management for helping to make this night Great

Pre-Season

Moving on to where we are at, in the men’s we have started pre-season training this week and have add really good turnouts to the first two trainings, These are every Tuesday and Thursday at 6pm, Everyone is welcome to these trainings they are made up of Ball skills and fun fitness games. You will see a few new faces running around and over the next few weeks I will introduce these young fellas to you. But we are looking good number-wise across all men’s grades with the only hole being Halfbacks right across the club, So if you’re a halfback or were dust those boots off and get along.

Premier Women

This year as you may have seen we are having a real crack at getting a Women’s Premier team up and running, we have about 14 women keen but need some more players, if you are sitting on the fence or know of some ladies that may be keen please reach out to them, They are playing fun skill game sand touch on every Wednesday at 6pm, please come along and make our dream of a woman’s Premier team come true.

Whilst we understand that everyone is trying to cope with the increased cost of living, the club is not excluded from this and we must keep abreast of the ever-changing prices the club is incurring. We do our utmost to keep prices as reasonable as possible but in doing so we also must maintain the balance between incoming revenue and outgoing costs.

Junior Committee

We have managed to keep Darryn Jones on as our Junior Convenor as long as we can get some people to help out with a few tasks (e.g. jerseys hand outs and returns and running the sausages and Saturday Mornings at Tukapa). What we are after are half a dozen people not tied up with coaching teams to help run our junior rugby. Many hands make light work.

Chairpersons Update

It all comes down to this Saturday for our Gardiner Colts.  These boys have worked hard this year and built well on the 2022 season.  The coaching from Zinny and Jared has been first class and the leadership from Patrick Butler cannot be faulted, the man is a true leader and I would follow him to war.

Their season has been up and down this year with losing a couple of games they should’ve won has put them in fourth spot against an in-form Inglewood team.  Their last two hit outs saw Inglewood win 32-15 and 34-12 so our boys need to bring their “A game” and make sure they turn opportunities into points. For our young chooks it will be the biggest game these boys have played in their lives and they need to make sure they give it everything on defence and really need to work as a team. No missed tackles and talking to each other will get them over the line.

What Can We Do To Help?

I remember two key days when our Colts boys have been there for our other teams. Eli hit the nail on the head in the B’S chat and pointed this out. Last year at our away game against Coastal these Colts boys dressed up after their game and the support they gave the B’s & Premiers from the sideline was second to none. Then at Vogeltown last year our Colts had their whole team on the sideline and they did not stop cheering on the B’s.  From there they moved across to the Premier game with the same noise. These young fellas are the true meaning of club culture and now it is our turn to give them back what they gave the other teams.

On Saturday we have a free bus leaving Tukapa at 12.15pm and heading to Inglewood then returning after the game. I challenge all the Premiers, B’s, and 3rds to fill all 40 seats then the Tukapa Blue and White supporters to fill the rest. Nothing would make me happier than to roll into Inglewood with a full bus of true Blue and White supporters to cheer our Colts on. In saying that nothing would look worse than 10 guys stepping off a 50-seater so please don’t let me down. Bar will be open at 11:00am with a free feed to get us started. AS RANGI LIVES LIFE

After the game, Tukapa will also be open.

If you really don’t think you can make it to the sidelines in Inglewood, then the game will be live-streamed on YouTube TRFU CH 3.

Next up is our club prize giving on the 22^nd of July at the chookhouse.  After some feedback, we have changed our format for prize giving.  We will be having a sit-down meal followed by the band THoze Fellas starting at 8.30pm.  The idea is that we get all the players and their partners to the prize giving but we also want to see all the Tukapa supporters as well.  In the past, this hasn’t happened.  So in the next few days, you will get emailed a link to buy your tickets for this and you will also be able to get them from me at the club on a Friday night or Saturday afternoon. The cost will be $20 for yourself and an extra $10 for your partner. Please support this night.

Chairpersons Update

Well just like that we are at the final round of round robin. This week sees all teams at home with our Premiers, Div 1, and Colts up against NPOB and our mighty Snr 3rds playing their quarter-final against Kaponga. Even though our B’s and Premiers have more injuries than A&E on a Saturday we have managed to put two teams out there that will play for the blue and whites and leave nothing behind. Our Colts need a win to try and lock in a home semi-final.

Our Snr 3rds have lifted their foot off the pedal the last few weeks but I am sure these boys can get the job done and live for another week.  They have named a strong lineup with 28 players that probably put over 1000 caps for Tukapa with Jack Fleming picking up over 300 of them. I have really enjoyed following our Snr 3rds this year and to be honest it hasn’t had a lot to do with the on-field rugby but it’s how these boys operate off the field that impresses me the most.  The way they get around the whole club and make sure no one is left behind. As a team, they are mates on and off the field and just enjoy their rugby and enjoy their mates afterward. Good luck Saturday fellas.

Collective First National Day

It’s a massive day Saturday and the reason is we give thanks to Collective First National for their ongoing support of Tukapa Rugby as naming rights sponsor. This is their 5th year being our sponsor and the amount of support shown is second to none. This relationship started with Judy Hurlstone and Grant Paterson and that relationship has carried on with Shawn Gibbon and Owen Mills along with Nick Hughes. We will be hosting Collective First National on the deck this Saturday so be sure to shake their hands and say thank you. But more importantly, if you are selling your house, please use these guys and make sure you tell them it's because they back us.

50 Games for Mairena

This week we say well done to Mairena Laapo who will play his 50^th game. Ma has been part of our Premiers since leaving FDMC and in the last couple of years has been our starting number 8. I look at him as a Crossy in the making, he is a hardball runner and not scared to put in the hard work around the field. Off the field, he is a hard man and usually the last to leave the club or first to fall asleep on the blue couch upstairs. In saying that he respects his club and will always greet you with a smile and a handshake. Go well this week mate.

Chairpersons Update

Two weeks of the season left before we head into the Semi-finals.  This week sees our Premiers, Division 1, and Colts all in Stratford. We have buses leaving Tukapa at 11:00am and 12:00pm both returning to watch the Super Rugby Final at Tukapa. The buses are free for anyone to jump on.

Our mighty Lion Brown Snr 3rds have a grade-wide bye weekend and will go into camp on the Golf Course for a well-led team-building day. 

True Country Club Spirit

Last weekend I had the privilege of joining our thirds boys on their bus trip to Toko. What a place to go and watch rugby. When we arrived we got off the bus and walked across the cattle stop, up the hill, and saw over 100 kids playing rugby and their team photos done outside on their old raised seating. We went inside their club rooms to grab some sponsor's products and they had half the bar set up for selling Brown Gold with the other half set up with Orange juice and Savs. Outside the changing rooms, both teams mixed and mingled and had a yarn about the past week’s rugby before both teams started to prep for the big game. We had a chat between club leaders about where each team would stand then shook hands, looked each other in the eye and the deal was done. 

During the game, I think I counted over 200 utes parked all around the club with people lining the sidelines and filling their deck. Our thirds played well but went down by 2 points, it was a great game of rugby that was then followed by the custom undie run for the Tukapa lads that hadn’t scored a try. While the boys were off doing the undie run the rest of both teams stood around outside again chatting rugby and having a laugh together before heading inside to a packed clubhouse. 

A man that we all know well, Mr Steven Needham, was our tour guide and made sure the boys didn’t miss out on a round of drinks. The speeches were had followed by Toko boys singing their song which was answered loud and proud by the Cast Iron Chicken led by Ned. Moving through the night we had some good chats with some good buggers and also bid well on their club auction - I still need to go back and pick up a slab of Macrocarpa that I won.

The long story short of this is, the passion that is shown in a great country club for their club and the game of rugby is second to none, and as long as we have a 3rds rugby division and a whole lot of good buggers involved, rugby is still alive and well in Taranaki. Next year I strongly suggest if you want a good day out at the rugby be sure to jump on the Snr 3rds bus to a country club and you won’t regret it. 

For our other three teams, it's now a numbers game. Our Premiers need to beat Stratford or NPOB to stay in the top 4 with Clifton and Coastal hot on their tail. Our B’s have had a rough season and are now out there to see if they can upset someone else’s apple cart.  Our Colts sit in 3^rd and should hold this spot then book a semi. If they win one or two games this will be a home semi and our thirds will play Kaponga at home next weekend in their Quarterfinal.

Collective First National Day

Next weekend sees all teams at home and is the Collective First National Day to thank First National for their five years as an overall club sponsor.  You will see these guys being hosted up on the deck, be sure to have a chat with them and thank them for backing Tukapa. These guys do a lot of good things around Taranaki and are always first back on board backing Tukapa. If you need a Real Estate agent, be sure to back the guys that back our club.

This year we are having a sit-down meal followed by a band for our prize-giving to get the best of both worlds.  Be sure to save the date - 22^nd July 5:00pm start.

Chairpersons Update

With the season moving towards the pointy end of the stick we see all teams in must-win games this Saturday.  The tables for all comps are tight and we need to push forward to pick up the valuable points on offer. This week all teams are on buses with the following leaving times:

Colts/B’s              Leave Tukapa 10:45am         Return by 7pm

Premiers              Leave Tukapa 11:45am         Return by 7pm

Thirds                   Leave Tukapa 11:00am        Return by 9pm 

All supporters are welcome on the buses and the aim is to have the two Southern buses back to Tukapa to watch the Super Rugby Semi final. Gav will be waiting to serve you.

Passing of Patron

This week I attended the funeral of our Patron, Bryan (Hooks) Hunger which made me stop and think. It’s the guys we play rugby with, socialize in the club rooms with, coach and manage. The banter with friends from other clubs and the mates we meet in the Blue and White hoops that are with us for life. It was awesome to see all the Tukapa members at Hooks funeral in their Tukapa Number Ones (from various Decades) paying tribute to a great Tukapa man who had become a life long friend of many. So with this being said, a message to our players is enjoy your rugby both on and off the field and build those life time mates who will always be there for you. That’s the Tukapa way.

NZ Barbarians U85 Club Cup

This Sunday sees our Nz Forestry Tukapa Bantams kick the season off finally, after a false start a few weeks back. On Sunday on Yarrows Number 1 they will take on Wellington U85 Axemen which I am sure will be a great game of running rugby.  Following this game there will be an after match at Tukapa with the bar open. Be sure to come out and support our fellas as they start their journey.

On Sunday I got sent an email about our Gardiner Plumbing colts and their Captain Paddy Butler, the email read as follows:

Hey mate, 

Just wanted to say, what a great bunch of men you had on the field today. Patrick was a bloody great leader and nothing negative from the boys (both teams) all day. Just thought I’d share how much of a pleasure it was to ref the game.

This is a great testament to our Colts, thank you boys for all being good buggers.  It means a lot to Tukapa and the Board.

This week I will be on the bus to Toko to watch our mighty 3rds take on a good Toko side in what I am sure will be a great day both on the field and off.  

Be sure to follow our teams as we hit the road two weeks in the row and also come back to the chookhouse for the aftergame chat and celebrations.

Chairpersons Update

The last week of round 1, man does time fly when you are having fun. This week we see our Premiers, Colts, and Div 1 head across to the Whitehouse to take on our friends NPOB which should see three great games of rugby. Our unbeaten Snr 3rds head to Bell Bock which should also be a great game with both teams running big squads.

Our Gardiner Plumbing Colts find themselves in a top-of-the-table clash and if you want to see a great game of rugby be sure to be there for a 1:00pm kick-off.

I was talking to Nathan at training on Thursday and he told me that the fellas trained the best they have all year with intensity and focus. Hopefully, we can flush the last couple of weeks away and put on a good showing.

It was a wet Thursday training made a lot better with the Greg Miles world-famous Mussel fritters and chips.  If this doesn’t fuel the boys I don’t know what will.

We are on the road for the next two weeks but don’t forget the bar is open each Saturday from 2:00pm with the Premier game live-streamed and usually stays open until at least 7:30pm but sometimes a lot longer depending on how many players are hanging around. The only thing better than watching Tukapa play is talking about it with a drink in hand afterward.

Remember our next big night at the club is the Tukapa Netball & Rugby Party on Saturday 27^th of May with DJ Jordy and a mechanical Bull for a western-themed dress up.
